Topics include:
MEANING + PURPOSE. “Creating meaning for me was born out of this type of curiosity, an awareness of how all the things around me influence my choices. How many of them are my own? And how many are the result of my schooling or the TV shows and advertising I consumed? All inadvertently teaching me that things outside of me are the key to living a good life.”
MENTAL HEALTH. “We cannot look at anything as if it appears in isolation. We see that everything - health, relationships, technology, society and culture, consumerism - connects to everything else.”
PRESENCE + ALIVENESS. “I have found that aliveness, life, doesn't start on the edge of a cliff or on some exciting adventure, and it isn’t always action and activity. But it is found in the silence, the conversation, the discomfort. The trick is - choosing to be present, to wake up, to reaffirm our presence when it would be so much easier to ruminate and lose ourselves in fantasy.”
KNOWING & TRUSTING YOURSELF. “Aristotle said “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom” and maybe it is this wisdom that teaches us to take greater responsibility for our choices, so we become less a product of our environment, and more a creator of it. In each moment it is fascinating to observe just how many choices we are making. These choices shape our lives, our character, our capacities.”
DEALING WITH FAILURE. “Life is hard. Maybe being human means knowing how to meet the hard parts and find peace. Whatever we are experiencing in the present moment is our life. If it is boredom, what can I learn from this boredom? Loneliness, despair, anger, restlessness, planning, worrying, and all the rest, these are telling us something about our relationship to life.”
THRIVING IN UNCERTAINTY. “Von Goethe said “Plunge boldly into the thick of life, and seize it where you will, it is always interesting.” We see life as interesting, not perfect, not always changing it to suit us, but interesting in whatever comes. And, maybe our lives can become more enjoyable and more peaceful when being content in not knowing. Knowing everything, or thinking we do, stifles our curiosity, and then ironically limits our possibilities.”
TOXIC AND HEALTHY MASCULINITY. “When we show authenticity and vulnerability we build connection, trust and we feel good. We also help break down unhealthy and dangerous perceptions of what strength and masculinity really is - and a beautiful ripple takes shape.”
STRESS AND ANXIETY. “Yes, it is easy to let all the busyness of our modern lives become stress and anxiety. But I have found over and over that if we train our attention and take responsibility for it, we become less dispersed and wake up to all moments of our lives.”
MINDFULNESS + MEDITATION. “How are you in the seemingly insignificant moments? When nothing exciting is happening? Are you rushing off to get to something better? If you cultivate that habit, you'll do it again to get to that next 'best' thing. You'll do it at the dinner table with your family, you'll do it when walking in the park with your child - and you'll miss out on life, again and again”
POSITIVE LIFE CHOICES. “Stopping and looking at our lives is important. Recognising the seeds of anger, fear, anxiety, infatuation, and cultivating what we value is important.”
TECHNOLOGY. “Our fast paced modern, uber connected, disconnected world preys on the lost and the distracted. It helps create the lost and distracted.”
SOCIETY & CULTURE. “Epictetus, the Greek philosopher, believed our greatest sufferings are “born out of a failure to distinguish what is in our control and what is not.” Do we put too much focus on an external world, one which is unpredictable and fragile by nature? While continuing to neglect our internal world, one which just might need more attention and care than ever?”
Evan plays at the intersections of philosophy, psychology, Buddhism, mindfulness, health and well-being, so we can all construct a life worth living
